Boy, reading "two feet on the carpet" sure brought back all sorts of "lying in my bed in Mattoon, Illinois and hoping my parents can't hear the game playing under the covers" memories. Great remembrance.

I enjoyed the El Birdos of the late 60s, mostly on radio, but loved Whitey’s teams in the 80s. So much fun to watch. Anytime we got someone on base, it was a rally with a threat to score (though not likely with a HR). Loved watching those Cardinals run the bases. Also, their defense was great. If the pitchers kept the ball in the park, it was likely an out. Ground balls turned into double plays. Ozzie and Willie were the best at turning hitters’ dreams into outs. Throughout, Whitey was the biggest star. Always good for a quip or a quote. We knew we wouldn’t be outmanaged. RIP, Whitey. Our condolences to his loved ones.

I’ve always been very jealous that I missed out on whiteyball. I was born in 83. Still have been a huge fan of whitey forever though. It’s pretty cool and wild that he set a template that us cards fans STILL look to when defining “good” baseball

growing up, I learned a lot about baseball listening to Jack Buck on the radio. I like to think that’s where I got my degree. My advanced degree came watching what Herzog managed the Cardinals in the 80s.

I watched game seven in 1982 on TV but I was there for the “go crazy folks” Homerun and probably another 300 games that decade. Whitey gave me “my” advanced degree. that doesn’t make me an expert by any means but I sure learned a lot!

To this day, I try to apply his simple rule for managing people. Be on time and give me 100% all the time.

He also knew he had to motivate players in different ways because of their personalities and he did so in a way that his players respected him, liked him, and today they revere him.

Don’t know if there’s ever been a manager as smart as Whitey, as wise as Whitey, as funny as Whitey, and as street Smart.

Beautiful eulogy, Dayn. Propulsive frenzy, indeed.

The 1982 Cardinals are my favorite team. Partly because the 70s were so deft of good teams. It had been 14 years between WS appearances, but seemed so much longer.

That team was so much fun to watch. There were better teams before and after, but none quite like that one.

Whitey is the reason I am the deranged 47 year old BFIB I am today, and have happily been for the past 40 seasons. Truly a case of "Don't cry because it's over. Smile because it happened."

I too wonder if I would have become a Cards fan without Whitey. As someone to young for the 60s teams, I remember meeting a kid from KC around 1980 and telling him it must be nice to live somewhere where they have a good baseball team. The 1985 team was so much fun and will probably always be my favorite.
